Longview Photographer | How to take better photos

I mean - DUH...everyone wants to know how to take a good photo.

I hear people tell me all the time - man, you even make a camera phone photo look good!  Well part of that is hard work, knowledge and thousands of dollars worth of school but there are a few simple things that you can do to help yourself take BETTER pictures.

1. Cropping.

Holy moly - do I HATE distracting stuff in photos....ick! This image is from my most recent beginner photo workshop.  One of my students shot this and it's a great image...no, really, it is.  It's just not so nice with my not-so-made-up self in the left hand corner.

Now look at the version below...whew, isn't that so much better?  And all I did was crop out the crazy distracting girl in the side of the photo.  Now you know where you are supposed to look and, if you saw this photo alone, you wouldn't even know.

When you are shooting, get closer to your subject, fill the frame if you can.  If you can't get closer, please CROP the photo before you post it online.  Watch out for trash cans, cars, people and other distracting things that can end up making your photos less interesting.

2.  Smiling is not that important.

Really, well, I mean it IS important, but the whole, "smile look at the camera" thing is totally overrated.  Some of the best photos I've ever seen have been 100% candid.

I mean, it's like they didn't even know I was there!

3. Let them be

I know it's so hard to just let your kids be who they are in photos.  I'm guilty two of spending hours deciding what I'm going to dress my little in for pictures.  But you want to know what?  The ones where I just grab my camera and head to the back yard with him because the light is just so darn pretty are the ones I love the most.  The ones that plaster my walls - oreo face, dirty shirt and all.
